| Essential Question: | How will China’s developing communist economic structure impact the world’s future? |
| Summary: | During the late 19th and 20th centuries, many American leaders have believed that capitalism, commerce and free trade will lead less developed countries toward democracy. After the death of Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping began to follow the “capitalist road” in the 1980s, making China the second richest country in the world today. Many people in the United States believe that as China industrializes and its standard of living rises, the Chinese people will begin to embrace democracy and turn away from the one-party system of government controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. This lesson explores similarities and differences between the Chinese system of government and the American system of government. |
