The 2014 Teachers Workshop was held August 4-5, 2014 at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation San Mateo Conference Center in San Mateo, CA. It received glowing endorsement from participating Bay Area Middle and High School Teachers who attended. The Workshop focused on the timely topic of China’s “Balancing Economic Development and Environmental Sustainability, Challenges and opportunities for China’s New Leadership”An excellent panel of 6 expert speakers from diverse academic and business backgrounds gave thought-provoking and informative presentations, moderated by Dr. Tom Gold, Professor of Sociology at Berkeley’s Center of Chinese Studies. Participating teachers had the opportunity to collaborate with each other in breakout sessions to create and share curriculum materials for their classrooms with the speakers. In addition, presentations were given by two special speakers: Ambassador Yuan Nansheng, San Francisco Consul General, People’s Republic of China and Dr Daniel Chao, Chairman of the 1990 Institute Board of Directors.
Nearly 60 Bay Area teachers representing 15 Bay Area school districts registered for this workshop. About 1/3 were middle school teachers and the other 2/3 were high school teachers who teach subjects such as World History, U.S. History, Government, Asian Studies, Global Perspectives, and Advanced Placement Chinese. About 80% of the teachers were from public schools and 20% from private schools. |
